Awkward coach incident can’t halt dominant Broncos

Brisbane has continued its dominance of the NRL Women’s competition and sent a message to the 2022 rivals with a big win over Newcastle.

The Broncos ran in five tries at Wollongong’s WIN Stadium today to beat the Knights 28-10.

The win follows last week’s Round 1 victory 20-4 over the Roosters.

The Broncos have won all three NRLW grand finals contested to date, and look to be the premiership favourites again this season in the early rounds.

Friendly fire floors Broncos veteran

Brisbane looked powerful on Sunday, highlighted by prop Millie Boyle running over the Newcastle defence to open the scoring in the 12th minute.

The Knights barely looked like scoring until Maitua Feterika brok their duck in the 56th minute.

That four-pointer breathed new life into the Hunter team, and soon after centre Jayme Fressard stunned the Broncos by breaking the defensive line and sprinting 70 metres to score their second. Suddenly it was 22-10 and an unlikely comeback had been mounted.

But an Amy Turner try in the 66th minute cemented the result for Brisbane.

“We just had to go back to playing simple,” Broncos hooker Lauren Brown told Nine’s coverage.

“We weren’t completing our sets, we weren’t getting a roll-on as a result. We had to play simple, complete our sets and let our footy do the talking.”

Knight’s stunning runaway try

Brown was at the centre of an unfortunate incident during the second half of the game.

She accidentally eye gouged her teammate Tallisha Harden, causing the game to be paused while the latter was attended to.

The Broncos also had their coach Kelvin Wright bizarrely locked out of the box to begin the second half.

The Broncos take on the Dragons next week, while the winless Knights go up against the Roosters.
