Award-Winning Oldman Graphic Novel Starts Crowdfunding Campaign for English Release
eigoMANGA launches a Kickstarter campaign to fund the English language adaptation of Chang Sheng’s popular Oldman graphic novel.
eigoMANGA recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to publish an English language version of the popular Oldman graphic novel.
Created by Taiwanese writer and illustrator Chang Sheng, Oldman was originally published by the Taipei, Taiwan-based Tong Li Publishing. The campaign strives to open the award-winning story to readers across the globe.
The Oldman novel follows an unmarried and childless queen who adopts orphans in hopes of proving that even commoners can learn to rule. The queen, however, has a big secret: she doesn’t age thanks to the magic of a bearded magician named Oldman, who the queen keeps locked in her dungeon. When Oldman escapes and teams up with a rebel named Rebecca, they agree to seek revenge on the queen.
In addition to winning the International Manga Award in Japan, the Oldman manga was also named the Golden Comic Award for Best Shonen Manga. The goal of the Oldman Kickstarter campaign is to raise funds to cover the printing, shipping, distribution and launch costs of releasing the English-language edition to retailers on Nov. 8.
It was first announced back in May that Oldman would be getting an English adaptation. A statement released by Barnes & Noble at the time read, “The beautiful artwork and elegant story-making of Chang Sheng’s Oldman propelled it into award-winning national fame. Now, this iconic comic is ready for the global audience it deserves.”
According to the Kickstarter campaign page, a $20 pledge will get you a comic book edition of the series, a $60 pledge will get you a graphic novel edition of the series and a $100 pledge will get you the exclusive art prints edition of the series. Meanwhile, a $150 pledge gets you a variant cover edition while a $250 pledge warrants a hardcover edition. The top-tier $500 pledge will get you the Friends & Family edition, which includes both the hardcover and graphic novel versions. The campaign has raised more than $1,600 of its $3,000 goal and will remain open until Sept. 9.
News of the Oldman Kickstarter campaign comes just days after it was reported that the campaign for Avatar: Legends was deemed the most successful Kickstarter RPG yet. Launched on Aug. 3, that campaign reached its goal of raising $50,000 in just 16 minutes and has seen nearly $6 million so far.
The English edition of Oldman is available for pre-order now, with Part 1 set for release on Nov. 8.
