Avengers: Nick Fury Recreated an Ominous MCU Post-Credits Scene

In Marvel’s Infinite Destinies, Nick Fury continues to protect the world from cosmic threats by recreating an ominous MCU post-credits screne.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for “Infinite Fury Part VIII,” from Avengers Annual #1, available now from Marvel.

In Marvel’s Infinite Destinies, Nick Fury Jr. has been on a hunt for the Infinity Stones. For a very long time, the cosmic gems were small stones withholding incredible power. But after the 2018 Infinity Wars event, the Infinity Stones changed. The stones were made sentient, and they traveled across the stars to find human hosts to bond with. So far, we have only seen a few of these human-bonded Infinity Stones: Ripley Ryan, aka Star, the host of the Reality Stone, and Hector Bautista, aka Overtime, host of the Time Stone.

In his search for these powerful cosmic weapons, Nick Fury Jr. came across the Squadron Supreme’s Nighthawk, who had his own plans to collect the gems. Now, in “Infinite Fury Part VIII” by Jed MacKay, Juan Ferreyra and VC’s Joe Caramagna, Fury finally bags his first Infinity Stone — and in doing so, he ends up recreating a classic Marvel Cinematic Universe end-credits scene.

In “Infinite Fury,” Nick Fury Jr fell prey to Nighthawk, when the villain brainwashed him and turned him into his ally. But thankfully, Fury’s turn didn’t last long. It turned out that the super-spy had planned for such an eventuality, and had a failsafe tattooed on his body that would reset his mind when he would see it. Now, in “Infinite Fury Part VIII,” Nick explains to Nighthawk how he was able to get free from the villain’s grasp, just as the two centered on Ripley Ryan.

Fury tells Nighthawk all about his plan while holding him at gunpoint. But before he can arrest him, the Squadron Supreme member activates a smoke bomb, which allows him to escape. When the smoke clears, Nighthawk is longer there but Fury, his mind now properly restored, stands next to an unconscious Star.

After this, Fury returns to one of his safehouses and there, we see that he has collected Ripley Ryan, keeping her sedated and imprisoned in a containment cell. He explains that the Infinity Stones pose too great a threat, especially since they are now embedded inside people who can wield their cosmic powers. He has taken the responsibility of protecting the Earth from the Stones upon himself, and he is clearly just getting started. “One down. Five to go,” he declares.

Here, Nick Fury Jr. essentially recreates the mid-credits scene of the 2013 film, Thor: The Dark World. In the film’s first after-credits scene, Sif and Volstagg travel to Knowhere, where they deliver the Aether, aka the Reality Stone, to the Collector. After the two Asgardians leave, the Collector then reveals that he is playing his own game when he says “One down, five to go.” At the time, this was the first confirmation that the Infinity Stones were in play in the MCU, and the Collector showed that it was his plan to collect all six.

Ultimately, the Collector wasn’t successful in his endeavor, but the mid-credits scene teased something massive — it was, after all, an important corner stone of the Infinity Saga. Now, in Marvel’s Infinite Destinies, Nick Fury Jr is playing the role of the Collector. In fact, just like in Thor: The Dark World, he gets his hands on the Reality Stone first. Of course, Fury is playing a much different game than the Collector — while one was after power, the other is intent on keeping the Earth safe, at any cost. Hopefully, Fury will be more successful than the Collector at getting his hands on more Infinity Stones.
