Avatar: The Way of Water has an Infinity War on its hands after surpassing the Avengers blockbuster to become the fifth highest-grossing film of all time.

It’s been just over a month since director James Cameron finally released the long-awaited sequel to his iconic sci-fi, after leaving fans waiting for 13 years.

The latest instalment sees Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington reprise their roles as Neytiri and Jake Sully respectively, and follows them as parents who must fight an ancient threat while exploring the regions of Pandora.

Fans have continued filling cinemas to see the epic in all its glory on the big screen, and has climbed the box office top 10 list of highest-grossing films of all time.

It’s currently at number five with a staggering $2.054bn (£1.66bn), overtaking Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War which was released in 2018 and has grossed $2.052bn (£1.65bn).

According to Variety, The Way of Water is predicted to sail past Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which is at number four after grossing $2.68bn (£2.16bn) worldwide, in just a matter of days once this weekend’s numbers are tallied.

The sequel has also become the highest-grossing movie of the pandemic era, placing it ahead of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which raked in $1.92bn (£1.55bn) in 2021. Internationally, The Way of Water has earned $1.5bn (£1.2bn)making it the fourth-biggest movie in history.

It has a good chance of continuing to climb the all-time list as the next blockbuster, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, isn’t scheduled to hit cinemas until February 17.

The update comes after director Cameron, 68, became the first director in history to have three films gross $2bn (£1.6bn) at the global box office – in addition to The Way of Water, he also has the original Avatar and 1997 classic Titanic.

Romantic drama Titanic, starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, remained the highest-grossing film of all time for 12 years with $2bn. The epic was nominated for 14 Academy Awards, winning 11 of them, and was praised for its design, special effects, and storytelling.

It was then overtaken by Cameron’s next project, Avatar, in 2009, which reached a gross total of $2.9bn (£2.3bn) worldwide and is still the highest-grossing film of all time.

Avatar: The Way of Water is out in cinemas now.
