Australia captain Meg Lanning ruled out of Ashes due to medical reasons
Australia captain Meg Lanning has been ruled out of the Women’s Ashes series against England this summer due to medical reasons.
Cricket Australia confirmed the 31-year-old has been withdrawn from the squad on the advice of medical staff as the issue requires management from home.
Lanning is one of the most decorated players in the game having won seven World Cups, while she captained Australia to the Commonwealth Games gold medal last year.
She has scored more than 8,000 runs across all formats and averages more than 50 in one-day internationals.
‘It’s an unfortunate setback for Meg,’ said CA’s Head of Performance Shawn Flegler. ‘She’s obviously disappointed to have been ruled out of the Ashes.
‘It’s a significant series for the team and she’ll be missed, but she understands the need to put her health first.
‘Meg will remain at home where she will continue to work with medical staff with the aim to return to playing as soon as possible.’
Lanning, who only returned to cricket in January following a six-month mental health break, will be replaced by wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy, with all-rounder Tahlia McGrath acting as vice-captain.
The Women’s Ashes is a multi-format series consisting of one Test match – at Trent Bridge on June 22 – three T20 games and three ODIs. Australia hold the urn following a 12-4 victory over England in 2021-22.
The Australia men’s team will also defend the Ashes this summer, with a five-match Test series against England starting on June 16.
