Aussie star at centre of brutal World Cup collision

Australian batter Beth Mooney was involved in a nasty collision during their World Cup game against West Indies in New Zealand.

The Aussies easily accounted for the Windies, winning by seven wickets after bowling the opposition out for a measly 131 in Wellington.

Ellyse Perry and Ash Gardner took three wickets apiece, before Rachael Haynes led the way with the bat, hitting an unbeaten 83 as the champions chased down the target inside 31 overs.

Mooney was at the crease with Haynes at the end, but she was lucky not to be in the casualty ward after a scary incident earlier in the innings.

Mooney was unbeaten on 9 and standing at the non-strikers end, when Haynes bunted a delivery and the Aussies set off for a run.

Windies wicketkeeper Shemaine Campbelle picked the ball up, and looked like she was going to catch Mooney well short of the crease.

But as Mooney sprinted up the pitch and Campbelle ran towards the stumps, both players collided.

Mooney flew over the top of Campbelle and landed on the ground, but it was the ‘keeper who ended up worse for wear.

“This is not going to be good,” commentator Lisa Sthalekar said.

“Campbelle, ribs… she’s a slight player as well, and Beth Mooney was going full pelt.

“You can see the knee collecting her in the ribs. It should have been (run) out.

“We’ve got to remember Mooney shattered her jaw only three or four weeks ago, too.”

Luckily they were both able to dust themselves off and continue playing.

Australia are so far unbeaten at the World Cup and next take on India on Saturday.
