Aussie icon’s touching tribute to cricket star
An Aussie music legend has paid tribute to Usman Khawaja with a heartwarming tribute to the cricketer that has gone viral.
What a week Usman Khawaja is having.
The 35-year-old created Ashes history by scoring centuries in both innings of the New Year’s Test at the SCG, capping a sensational return to the Australian Test side.
He became the first Australian to score twins tons in Sydney since Ricky Ponting achieved the feat against South Africa in 2006.

Khawaja captured the hearts of the nation and now Aussie music icon Paul Kelly has written a song in his honour.
On Wednesday, the legendary singer took to social media to share a beautiful tribute to Khawaja, who clearly caught his attention with his dual centuries.
In the three-minute video, Kelly sings about Khawaja’s career while strumming an acoustic guitar in the style of American performer Hank Williams.
Khawaja was understandably thrilled one of Australia’s most popular musicians had penned a song in his honour.
“An Australian legend,” he said sharing Kelly’s video.
“What an honour. Thanks @paulkelly. Love the song, and the shirt. ️#khawaja #tune #kingkelly.”
Khawaja joins elite company as just the third cricketer Kelly has dedicated his dulcet tones to. The only other two Aussie cricket legends he has written songs about are Don Bradman and Shane Warne. Not bad Uzzie, not bad.
Khawaja’s memorable summer is set to continue as he firms for selection for the fifth Ashes Test in Hobart starting on Friday.
He is likely to take opener Marcus Harris’ spot at the top of the order, while Travis Head is all but certain to slot back in at No. 5 after his bout with Covid ruled him out of the SCG Test.
Harris is averaging 25 in this Ashes series and is yet to make a century during his 14 Tests.
In the bowling department, it appears Mitchell Starc will not be rested for the Hobart Test, becoming the only Australian fast bowler to play all five matches in the series.
Scott Boland is in extreme doubt with injury, with his place to be taken by either Jhye Richardson or Michael Neser.
