Aussie icon awarded title 30 years after robbery

Australian boxing great Jeff Fenech has been awarded a fourth world title 30 years after having the belt robbed from him by dodgy judges cards.

The boxing world was shocked in 1991 when Fenech looked to have triumphed over Ghanaian fighter Azumah Nelson in Las Vegas, only for the scorecards to come back as a split draw.

It was nine months later when the pair met again and the Aussie suffered the first loss of his career, Nelson winning via a stoppage.

The pain has stuck with Fenech for the last 30 years but on Tuesday he was rightfully handed the belt which eluded him.

The now-58-year-old was called on stage at a World Boxing Council event in Mexico and handed the super-featherweight title officially.

“All the ring officials from all over the world score the bout in favour of Jeff Fenech,” WBC president Mauricio Sulaimán said.

“The WBC board of governors approve the motion to crown Jeff Fenech to become a four-time world champion.”

At the time of the 1991 robbery Fenech had already won the bantamweight, super-bantamweight, and featherweight world titles.

Tuesday’s announcement makes him a four-time world champion.
