Aussie boxing star’s devastating TV interview

Skye Nicolson has broken down in heartbreaking scenes after missing out on becoming Australia’s first female boxing medallist since the 1988 Olympics.

Nicolson was up against Great Britain’s Karriss Artingstall, and the judges voted the contest 3-2 the Brit’s way after three tightly-contested rounds, leaving Nicolson in tears.

The win means Artingstall advanced to the semi-finals of the women’s featherweight division, with each of the final four fighters guaranteed an Olympic medal.

After claiming gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast, Nicolson was left crushed after having her dreams of securing an Olympic medal delayed until the 2024 Paris Games.

“It’s pretty hard to put it into words right now,” a crestfallen Nicolson said during a TV interview, wiping tears away from her eyes as she spoke.

“[Getting close to a medal] means nothing to me. I don’t care about that. I care about what I know I’m capable of, and not achieving that is really heartbreaking.

“I came here with one goal and that was the gold medal and I truly believed that I was going to win it, so to go out hard is really, really hard for me.

“It’s definitely not the end, but I’m going to take some time and see what happens next.

“Sorry I didn’t get the job done. Thank you everyone, the support’s been absolutely unbelievable, my very close circle especially.”
