Ashton Kutcher recounts losing unborn baby with ex-wife Demi Moore: ‘Really, really painful’

Ashton Kutcher recalled being overcome with grief after his former wife, American actress Demi Moore, suffered from miscarriage—a “really, really painful” experience he had to cope with in his 20s.

In an exclusive interview with Esquire magazine on Tuesday, Jan. 31, the American actor spoke about this as he recalled how his “life changed” when his relationship with Moore, who was 15 years his senior at the time, was revealed to the public.

Although he was “very much in love” so that it led to marriage, Kutcher admitted that it was “a lot” being a stepdad to Moore’s three daughters with her ex-husband Bruce Willis, all while Moore was “losing” her sobriety journey.

“I was twenty-six, bearing the responsibility of an eight-year-old, a ten-year-old, and a twelve-year-old,” he said, referring to Rumer, Scout and Tallulah, with whom he still maintains relationships until now. “That’s how some teen parents must experience their twenties.”

Kutcher then spoke about Moore’s miscarriage and revealed that after her pregnancy loss, the former couple tried to have a child through in vitro fertilization (IVF) for several years.

“Losing a kid that you think you’re going to have, and that close to thinking you’re going to have a kid, is really, really painful,” he told the publication. “Everyone deals with that in different ways.”

“I love kids,” he continued. “I wouldn’t have gotten married to a woman that had three kids if I didn’t love kids. The idea of having another kid would have been incredible.”

Looking back, Kutcher said that even with the grief that came with the miscarriage, he would not have changed what happened because “for whatever reason, [he] had to have that experience.”

Kutcher also talked about his divorce from Moore and how messed up he felt at the time—a point in his life which he described as “humiliating and embarrassing.”

“Nothing makes you feel like a failure like divorce,” Kutcher said. “Divorce feels like a wholesale f*cking failure. You failed at marriage.”

“You own the shit you did wrong, and you go forward,” he added, speaking about how he coped.

Kutcher and Moore got married in 2005, then announced their split in 2011. Their divorce was finalized in 2013.

In 2015, Kutcher tied the knot with his “That ’70s Show” co-star Mila Kunis. Kutcher and Kunis have two kids together, namely Wyatt and Dimitri.  /ra
