Asda set to close more supermarkets and pharmacies across the UK
Asda confirmed it will be closing two of its Living stores in July and seven Asda Pharmacies in August.
Asda has 33 Living stores across the country that sell clothing, homeware and entertainment goods, including electronics, and 254 of its supermarkets have in-store pharmacies.
The company explained that the affected sites have been “running at a loss for a number of years,” while the pharmacies will close due to low customer usage.
A total of seven Asda pharmacies will shut down on August 3, 2023, The Sun reported. The Asda pharmacy in Blackburn had a sign outside saying: “We are writing to inform you that we are permanently closing our pharmacy at Asda Blackburn – Lower Audley Retail Park, Grimshaw Park Road, Blackburn, BB2 3DY on Thursday, August 3, 2023.
“This isn’t a decision we’ve taken lightly and we are taking every step to prevent any inconvenience this may cause you as we know how important regular access to a pharmacy is.
“If you have nominated this pharmacy as your chosen pharmacy at the doctor’s you will need to change your nomination.
“This is not something we can do for you, so please take some time in identifying the pharmacy which most closely matches your need.
“By taking action now, this will ensure that you can continue receiving your prescription on time.”
A spokesperson for Asda commented: “Despite the best efforts of our hard-working colleagues, our Asda Living store in Wrexham has been running at a loss for a number of years so unfortunately following a period of consultation we have decided to close the store.
“We recognise this will be a difficult time for colleagues at the store and we are in discussions with all of them to support them through this process, we will do all we can to find alternative roles in other local stores.”
Asda announced it is currently in the process of launching a new Asda Express, its convenience store concept, and open 300 Asda Express by the end of 2026.
