As demand picks up, Bajaj plans to increase triumph output

Bajaj Auto has asked its motorcycle part suppliers to prepare for doubling production for the newly launched Triumph range of motorcycles following a better-than-expected response to the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X models, multiple people aware of the company’s plans said.

Bajaj Auto has received over 15,000 bookings since the launch and counting. The ramp-up plans suggest that the company is striving to touch volumes of around 40,000-45,000 units in the current fiscal year and 100,000-120,000 units in the next fiscal year. This could potentially add around ₹800-900 crore to its revenue in the ongoing fiscal year, as per analyst estimates. Bajaj Auto launched the locally designed and developed middleweight models from Triumph in India on July 5.

Rakesh Sharma, executive director at Bajaj Auto, did not share production numbers, but said, “There has been an outstanding response to the launch, as in just about a week, over 15,000 customers have booked one of the two bikes in only 17 centres where we have dealerships.”

Production and distribution will be ramped up in a steady and phased manner, he said. “The better-than anticipated response does put pressure to accelerate production as well as distribution,” Sharma said.

The Pune-based motorcycle maker has a global alliance with the UK-based iconic motorcycle maker Triumph for co-developing, designing and retailing middleweight motorcycles models in India and other markets. Sharma said the company expects exports to commence from October. Last week, in a meeting with 150 odd suppliers, Bajaj Auto asked for higher production targets, people cited above said.

They were earlier given a schedule to increase production in a phased manner, taking it up to 5,000 units by November-December. This has now been revised to over 10,000 units. Competition in the 250cc-plus bike space is intensifying as motorcycle makers see a substantial value and volume growth in this category that sold over 800,000 units in FY23.Analysts expect the newly launched models to boost Bajaj Auto’s market share and volumes in the 250cc segment.
