Artist Ramon Villalobos Imagines Salma Hayek’s Ajak Wearing Jack Kirby’s Costume

Veteran comic artist Ramon Villalobos reimagines Salma Hayek’s Ajak in the character’s colorful, elaborate costume from the classic Eternals comics.

A new piece of Eternals art by a fan-favorite comics illustrator sees Salma Hayek’s Ajak donning the character’s classic costume.

The artwork, created by Ramon Villalobos and posted to his Twitter, sees the Eternals’ leader trade the blue and gold costume from the recent Marvel Cinematic Universe film for a much more colorful, elaborate ensemble. According to the description, while Villalobos loved Hayek’s casting, he wishes “they would have just went with the [Jack Kirby] costume. they always overthink this stuff.”

Villalobos is a veteran of the comic book industry. He has contributed his artistic talents to several Marvel properties, including the cover art for X-Men Blue #1 (2017) and interior work for comics series like What If …?, Secret Wars and Nighthawk.

Created by Kirby and making their comic book debut in July 1976, the Eternals are a race of alien humanoids who are virtually immortal and wield superhuman powers to fight the monstrous Deviants. Within the internal continuity of Marvel stories, they serve as the basis for many mythological figures around the world.

The Eternals made their cinematic premiere in Chloé Zhao’s 2021 MCU film. Alongside Hayek, many other popular and experienced actors featured in Eternals, including Gemma Chan, Richard Madden Kumail Nanjiani, Kit Harington and Angelina Jolie. While hype and expectations for the movie were high before its release last November, it underperformed at the box office and holds the dubious honor of being the MCU’s first entry to be classified as ‘Rotten’ by the review aggregation website, Rotten Tomatoes.

While Eternals was not as well-received as other recent projects in the MCU like Spider-Man: No Way Home and WandaVision, the characters introduced in the film are expected to make appearances in future titles. Stephane Ceretti, Eternals‘ VFX supervisor, teased in a recent interview that Harington’s Dane Whitman/Black Knight may make an appearance in the upcoming Blade film, which currently does not have a release date.

Lia McHugh, who played Sprite in the movie, discussed potential developments for her character going forward in the MCU. “As a human, I honestly think she might go a little crazy,” the actor posited about Sprite’s new ability to age. “I think she may be a bit of a trouble child, if I’m being honest with you. I bet she’ll grow up and be so excited to do everything. I think about that sometimes, about where she would be when we come back in [the potential] Eternals 2.”

Eternals is now available to stream on Disney+.
