Arsenal’s Maanum nominated for player of month award

Arsenal midfielder Frida Maanum has been nominated for the Women’s Super League player of the month award for October.

The Norwegian moved into the number 10 role during the month, meaning that Vivianne Miedema was left out of the team and had to settle for a place on the bench.

Maanum impressed and scored against defending Women’s Champions League holders Lyon away from home in Arsenal’s stunning 5-1 victory.

And in her three appearances in the WSL against Reading, Liverpool and West Ham the 23-year-old found the back of the net twice, including a stunning solo goal at Liverpool.

That goal against Liverpool has also been nominated for the goal of the month award as Maanum shimmied away from challenges before slamming into the net.

Due to the stiff competition in the Gunners squad, Maanum has had to be patient to get her chance, but she is now relishing her regular starting position.

“I’m really happy to be here at Arsenal and also to get game time, which I’ve waited a long time for,” she said.

Maanum faces stiff competition from Manchester United duo Mary Earps and Leah Galton, West Ham’s Dagny Brynjarsdottir, Chelsea’s Lauren James and Manchester City striker Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw.

Meanwhile, Jonas Eidevall has been nominated for the manager of the month award after leading the Gunners to three wins in between two Champions League victories.

Eidevall is nominated alongside Manchester United’s Marc Skinner, Manchester City’s Gareth Taylor and Chelsea’s Denise Reddy and Emma Hayes.

Arsenal scored six goals in the WSL during the month and conceded just once – the first goal conceded in a record 10 consecutive matches.

Voting closes at 10am UK time on Monday November 7, with the winner announced at midday on Thursday November 10.
