Arsenal’s Dusan Vlahovic transfer hopes ‘fading’ but Gunners have £40.5m Plan B

Arsenal could miss out on landing Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic this month but could instead turn their attentions to Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The Gunners are in desperate pursuit of a frontman as they look to secure a Champions League place at the end of the season.

Arsenal began the campaign in dire form as they lost their opening three games and dropped to the bottom of the Premier League table.

But they rallied in the autumn as they went on an eight-game unbeaten run to put themselves in contention for the top four.

The Gunners lost to Liverpool, Manchester United and Everton during a blip but won four consecutive games in December to illustrate their mettle.

Boss Mikel Arteta has been lacking options up-front after he stripped Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of the captaincy before Christmas and jettisoned him from the team following a disciplinary breach.

Frenchman Alexandre Lacazette has been chosen to lead the line in recent weeks – but he is coming to the end of his Gunners contract and could leave the club when the season comes to an end.

Arsenal could therefore attempt to prise Calvert-Lewin away from the Toffees, who are having a miserable season.

Calvert-Lewin has been Everton’s leading light for the last few seasons and fired in 16 goals in 33 Premier League games during the 2020/21 campaign.

The 24-year-old notched in his first three matches of this season but then broke his toe and faced nearly four months on the sidelines.

He returned to action at the start of January as he played the full 90 minutes in his side’s 3-2 defeat to Brighton.

But he may now feel he has done as much as he can with the north west club.

Everton are 16th in the Premier League table and are sitting perilously close to the relegation zone. And earlier this week they sacked their manager Rafa Benitez after less than seven months in charge.

Calvert-Lewin, who is valued at £40.5million by Transfermarkt, has won 11 caps for England and has scored four goals for his country.

He has been tipped to move on to bigger and better things – but Everton could be unwilling to sanction a move while their top-flight status is under threat.

But if Arsenal can turn the Toffees’ heads with a suitable offer, it could be a shrewd piece of business from Gunners chiefs.
