Arsenal weighing up swoop for Bayern Munich starlet but waiting on Tuchel ruling
Arsenal are monitoring Ryan Gravenberch’s situation at Bayern Munich and could make a move for the midfielder in the summer, according to reports in Germany.
The 20-year-old ran down his contract with Ajax before making a £21million move to the Allianz Arena last summer, though he has failed to live up to that price tag so far.
Gravenberch had established himself in the Netherlands’ first-team prior to the move, but he has lost his place in the squad after making just one Bundesliga appearance for Bayern so far.
Previous manager Julian Nagelsmann did not appear to rate the young Dutchman, providing him with precious few opportunities to impress.
Bayern have a packed roster of talented midfielders in their squad, with Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka and Jamal Musiala all regular starters and ahead of Gravenberch in the pecking order.
Marcel Sabitzer also found game time hard to come by in Bavaria as a result and was shipped out to Manchester United on loan in January, though even the Austrian’s exit did not create more opportunities for Gravenberch.
Thomas Tuchel’s arrival has not changed things either, with the former Ajax starlet yet to start under the new manager.
Now Sky Sport Germany are reporting that Arsenal are keeping tabs on Gravenberch’s situation and could make a move for him in the summer.
The Gunners are keen to add a new midfielder to their ranks when the transfer window reopens despite signing Jorginho from Chelsea and have been heavily linked with more of a box-to-box, attacking player to provide cover and competition for Granit Xhaka.
There have been no negotiations yet, however, and there would be no guarantees that Gravenberch would receive any more game time at the Emirates than he currently does at the Allianz Arena – something that will play a key role in his thinking if he does decide to leave.
Any decision over Gravenberch’s future will be left up to Tuchel, who has only been in the job for a few weeks and will likely want to see the midfielder in pre-season before casting him aside.
Gravenberch arrived at Bayern with a massive reputation and was billed as a star of the future, with a host of clubs – including Manchester United and old Ajax boss Erik ten Hag – clamouring for his signature.
However, he has racked up just 324 minutes of action in the Bundesliga – plus two more starts in the Champions League – with his only goal or assist coming in the DFB-Pokal Cup.
