Arsenal to receive PSV payment after UEFA slap triple punishment

UEFA have slapped PSV Eindhoven with a heavy fine after crowd trouble during their Europa League clash against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium last week. The Gunners are set to receive significant compensation to cover damage caused by the away supporters.

Following Arsenal’s 1-0 win in north London, almost guaranteeing top spot in Group A, PSV fans dismantled and threw chairs and flairs from the away section of the Emirates. UEFA charged the Dutch Eredivisie giants the next day and have now confirmed their hefty punishment.

PSV have been fined £34,700 (€40,000) and are now banned from selling tickets for the away end against Bodo/Glimt next Thursday. They also have 30 days to send Arsenal a payment for the damages caused by their supporters.

A statement on Thursday read: “UEFA Europa League group stage match between Arsenal FC and PSV Eindhoven (1:0), played on 20 October in London.

“Decision: To fine PSV Eindhoven €40,000 and to ban PSV Eindhoven from selling tickets to its away supporters for the next one (1) UEFA competition match, for throwing of objects, crowd disturbances and acts of damages.

“To order PSV Eindhoven to contact Arsenal FC within 30 days for the settlement of damages caused by its supporters, i.e. for the damaged seats.”

On Thursday night, it’s Arsenal’s turn to travel to Eindhoven as they look to confirm their status as Group A winners and avoid a daunting play-off round against one of the Champions League’s third-place teams. A draw would be enough for Mikel Arteta’s side to become unreachable on next week’s final matchday.

The Gunners will be looking to bounce back after an uninspiring second-half display saw them slump to a 1-1 draw at Southampton at the weekend, losing ground at the Premier League summit. Arteta will hope his side can replicate their ‘dominance’ from the home fixture against PSV in what should be a wild atmosphere at the Philips Stadion.

After full-time at the Emirates, he told BT Sport: “We had really good moments, and we were really dominant against a really good side. I think we just lacked that final pass or shot. But we’re very happy to win the game, and we [have] qualified, which is the first step.

“In Europe, you have to control the opponent. They are very talented, used to winning, and the amount of goals they have scored is incredible. We were really composed and mature. When you have the chance in Europe, you have to take it. The difference between finishing first and second is big, and we want to get the job done.”
