Arsenal ripped apart for ‘hideous’ new kit with calls for it to be ‘cancelled’

Arsenal have released their new away kit ahead of the start of the 2023-24 campaign but fans have called for the shirt to be ‘cancelled’ after its design did not prove to be popular. The Gunners are set to mount another Premier League title challenge after spending big in the transfer market, but supporters are concerned about the state of their team’s attire following the release of their new strip.

Mikel Arteta’s side have already brought out their Adidas home strip and the red and white design won praise for its slick yet simple template, with Kai Havertz, Declan Rice and Jurrien Timber all modelling the new shirt after arriving as new signings.

But the next jersey to arrive in the club shop is proving to be far from a hit with their fans. The yellow and black striped design, complete with a turquoise-blue badge and sponsor, has left fans scratching their heads.

The shirt has ‘meandering graphics’ that point to the ‘continuous flow of supporters around the Emirates’. The shirt featured HEAT.DRY technology to give fans the ‘ultimate comfort and breathability’. It is made with Primeblue x Parley Ocean Plastic, a high-performance eco material obtained from upcycled marine plastic waste.

But fans are not impressed, with some even calling for the ‘worst-ever’ design to be scrapped by their kit manufacturer, with critics on social media labelling their newest shirt ‘hideous’.

@fneitzke tweeted: “Whoever approved this kit needs to be fired asap. That’s the most hideous thing I’ve ever seen.”

Another fan, @ConnorHumm, wrote: “Can’t believe someone said ‘yes, this is a good design’.”

That proved to be a theme as @fneagles tweeted: “Hideous. Might even go as far as to call this the worst Arsenal away kit in my lifetime.”

As news of the kit spread, so did the criticism. Another use r@Dannondalee said: “This is the worst kit I’ve ever seen, EVER. Honestly stunned someone approved this.”

Elsewhere, @gunner13_x took aim at their kitmaker: “Well done, Adidas. You’ve actually managed to create one of the worst kits in the entire history of English football. Quite a remarkable achievement, really.”

Even Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard, who is featured modelling the new kitwear on the club’s official website, wore a somewhat glum expression as he was snapped wearing the new shirt.

However, supporters were left impressed with the production value of the two-minute video release, which featured famous Gunners such as Sex Education actor Asa Butterfield and former Eastenders star Martin Kemp.

But after yet another kit gaffe from Adidas, Arsenal fans may well be calling for a new kit supplier, with their iconic designs from Nike during the Invincibles era and 2006 Champions League final now a thing of the distant past.

It is unclear when Arsenal will debut the new shirt, but given they are currently on tour in the USA, it is feasible they could introduce it in one of their pre-season matches against MLS All-Stars or Manchester United this week.
