Arsenal on alert as £17.5m Real Madrid target Mendy told he can leave

Arsenal have been given the green light to approach Ferland Mendy after the French international was reportedly told he can leave Real Madrid in the summer. Los Blancos are looking to free up space in their squad to help fund new signings and Mendy is among those who are surplus to requirements.

The 27-year-old is out of contract in June 2025 and is said to be valued at £17.5m, with Arsenal now ‘on alert’ – according to the Mirror. It is understood that the Gunners are interested in acquiring his services in order to add depth at left-back with backup Kieran Tierney’s future presently unclear.

The Scot has fallen down in the pecking order since the arrival of Oleksandr Zinchenko this season and has been linked with a move away to Newcastle.

Mendy would fit into Arsenal’s style of football having played as an inverted full-back for Real Madrid with plenty of tactical familiarity in using underlaps as a form of penetration, something Mikel Arteta is a great advocate for.

‌According to the Mirror, the player is eyeing a three-year deal elsewhere after his representatives were told there would be no new offer for him to play at the Bernabeu. It is understood that his agents are seeking talks with Tottenham as well as Arsenal.

However, Mendy is hoping to play Champions League football next season, which looks thoroughly unlikely for Spurs. Arsenal will be far happier with the current asking price of £17.5m after it was reported that Madrid were looking for £52.5m for him.

Those reports from Fichajes also claimed that Manchester City and Newcastle United were keen on the player and that Mendy’s links to a move away were due to his injury problems. Mendy has missed 24 games this season due to various muscular issues and remains on the sidelines at the time of writing.

Madrid are expected to re-sign Fran Garcia in the summer after an impressive spell at Rayo Vallecano while David Alaba and Nacho Fernandez are favoured at left-back over Mendy.
