Arsenal make first moves in January transfer window

Arsenal Women made their first moves of the January transfer window to bring in Dutch international Victoria Pelova from Ajax and Kathrine Kuhl from FC Nordsjælland.

Pelova played against the Gunners in the Champions League qualifying round earlier this season and said: “I’m delighted to have signed for Arsenal, I’ve always admired this club and dreamt of following in the footsteps of some of the great Dutch players who have worn the shirt. I can’t wait to get going and start contributing to the team.”

The forward began her professional career at ADO Den Haag in 2016, before making the switch to Ajax in 2019. In three and a half seasons in Amsterdam, she made 66 appearances for Ajax and scored 11 goals.

Pelova has also made 31 appearances for the Dutch national team, was part of the squad that reached the final of the 2019 Women’s World Cup, and played a key role in their run to the quarter-finals of the European Championship in 2022.

Head coach Jonas Eidevall added: “It’s fantastic news that we’ve signed Victoria. She’s one of the most exciting young players in the game and will bring added dynamism and energy to our midfield. I’m looking forward to working with Victoria and I think our supporters are going to love watching her in an Arsenal shirt.”

Danish international Kuhl, 19, joins after three full seasons in the Elitedivisionen, having made 12 appearances for FC Nordsjælland this term, with two goals and four assists from central midfield.

Kuhl made her debut for the Denmark in April 2021 and has 21 caps, having also performed at last summer’s UEFA Women’s European Championship.

“I’m very excited and looking forward to playing for Arsenal. It’s a big step for me,” she said.

“I feel like there are so many great things around the club; all the fans and the community, it’s like a sisterhood in some way. So, I’m looking forward to being a part of that.”

The club has also recalled Gio Queiroz from her loan spell at Everton, where the 19-year-old Brazilian scored one goal in 11 appearances.

The forward joined the Gunners from Barcelona last summer, and was immediately sent on loan to Everton for the duration of the 2022/23 campaign.

“Everyone at Arsenal would like to welcome Gio back and look forward to seeing her in red and white soon,” said a club statement.

With Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema injured, Arsenal needed to bolster their forward line.

Debinha was a target for the club but opted to stay in the US with Kansas City, however Queiroz will be available for Sunday’s game with Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium.
