Arsenal legends cost bookies £8k with teammate sin-binned for ‘headbutt’ on ref
IT’S not everyday you bump into two Arsenal Invincibles on the 5-a-pitch.
But that’s exactly what happened over the weekend as Lauren and Jeremie Aliadiere were joined by William Gallas, Paddy Kenny and Clinton Morrison at Powerleague Birmingham.
The Premier League legends turned up for a surprise game against Ladbrokes Players Cup winners, Slough Scorpionz and ended up costing the bookies a whopping £8,000!
‘Scorpionz’ won £20,000 after seeing off the 16-team strong field of regional winners from London, Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow, defeating Barrowfield Bruisers in the final.
Scorpionz then went on to play William Gallas and co in a game for the chance to win an extra £8k — taking the total prize pot to £33k.
The ‘Boss Level’ match finished 6-4 to Scorpionz, while Crystal Palace legend Clinton Morrison was sensationally sent to the sin-bin for a ‘headbutt’ on referee, Terence Wallen.
The victory meant every team who made the finals day received £500, taking the total prize pot to £33k.
Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “Our five-a-side sensations have proven they can mix it with the best!
“They secured a convincing win against a handful of Invincibles, Premier League legends and freestyle stars, to the tune of a record-breaking cash prize at a Powerleague tournament.
“Super-subs, sin-bins and surprise appearances; the inaugural Ladbrokes Players Cup has seen it all.
“The standard of football over the last few months has been nothing short of exceptional and we can’t wait to see Slough Scorpionz defend their crown next year.”
