Arsenal have spent £186m more than Man Utd under Arteta as Rice and Timber join

Arsenal have committed the highest net spend in the Premier League since Mikel Arteta became the club’s manager in December 2019. Fans and pundits alike expect another push for the title next season amid a busy summer, in which the Gunners’ expenditure will soon hit £204million.

Arsenal have splashed over £526m across the eight transfer windows with Arteta at the helm, a figure soon to see another increase.

Kai Havertz has arrived at the Emirates Stadium in a £65m deal from Chelsea, bolstering the Spaniard’s attacking firepower.

And Declan Rice and Jurrien Timber will soon follow the German forward through the door for a combined £139m.

It will bump Arteta’s spending as Arsenal boss to over £665m, contributing to the highest net spend in the Premier League during his reign, £186m more than Manchester United.

In comparison, Manchester City have won the title three times in the same period with a net spend of just over £181m.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have only managed eighth twice and a fifth-place finish before losing out to City in last season’s title race.

The north Londoners’ net spend is bound to go down with more high-profile exits later this summer.

Granit Xhaka has left for Bayer Leverkusen, and Nicolas Pepe and Thomas Partey are among the players linked with following him out of the club.

Whether there will be any more room in Arteta’s budget after Rice and Timber complete their moves from West Ham United and Ajax, respectively, remains to be seen.

But given Arsenal’s net spend under his watch, they will be expected to continue their momentum after an improved 2022/23 season and perhaps go a step further to lift a first Premier League title since 2004.
