Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta ‘holds talks’ with PSG chief but problem highlighted
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has met PSG for talks about the vacant managerial vacancy, according to French reports. The Ligue 1 champions are lining up Arteta to replace Christophe Galtier after parting ways just one season into his tenure earlier this month.
According to RMC Sport, PSG sporting advisor Luis Campos has held discussions with the Spaniard about succeeding Galtier.
However, it’s added that he isn’t optimistic about the club’s chances of luring Arteta from his exciting project at the Emirates Stadium.
PSG were reportedly in talks with Julian Nagelsmann, who Bayern Munich sacked in March.
But negotiations with Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur during the Premier League pair’s managerial hunt broke down, and the result was the same in the French capital.
Galtier guided PSG to their latest league title this season, but failure to deliver success in the Champions League with an all-star squad has cost another coach his job at the Parc des Princes.
Arteta would become PSG’s fourth permanent manager in five years after Galtier, Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel.
He is entering the final year of his Arsenal contract on the back of guiding the club to their best Premier League season since 2007/08.
The Gunners fell short in the title race, finishing five points behind champions and eventual treble winners Manchester City.
However, Arteta’s stocks have undergone a meteoric rise over the last 12 months, and PSG are said to have evaluated his interest in a possible exit.
Arteta departing North London during the off-season would cause Arsenal significant complications.
Preparations are already well underway for the new campaign, with Declan Rice and Kai Havertz being lined up for arrivals.
Meanwhile, PSG are in a state of disarray. Lionel Messi has left the Parisiens as a free agent, while Kylian Mbappe has signalled his intent to follow him out the door next summer.
Despite the embarrassment of riches at the club’s disposal, achieving success and then consistently delivering in Paris is rapidly becoming one of football’s toughest gigs.
