Are This Year’s Mocks Taking The Mick? Arya Dassi, Parmiter’s School
Year 11 mock exams. The dreaded thought. Whilst the term ‘exams’ may bring words to mind like stress, shaking and sweating, mock exams are meant to provide pupils with an opportunity to gain an insight into what actual GCSE exams are like, in turn boosting their confidence as they have an idea of how strictly these exams are assessed.
Whilst some schools have already done theirs, our Year 11’s sit anxiously awaiting the belly of the beast. I asked some students how they felt about their upcoming exams.
To no surprise, many felt unready to sit them. “I feel like I’m underprepared and just really scared… and nervous… and anxious,” says Hiya Upadhyay.
“There’s a lot… and they don’t teach you what we need to focus on exactly, and they don’t give you a proper way to revise. They just say do it and there’s just so much and I don’t know where to start,” remarks Lola Baigent, criticising teachers’ lack of support and guidance through these stressful times.
But are this year’s trial examinations any different to the previous ones? Is there a reason in particular as to why so many Year 11’s don’t feel ready to sit them? Laura Turner offers some food for thought:
“I feel very unprepared. I think it’s mainly because the year before us were a lot more prepared than us, and that’s because they were so scared… people made them scared from how much school they missed. We missed a lot of school as well and other people aren’t putting the fear in God in us. It’s kind of like we’re not really as fussed as we probably should be, and as scared as we should be, and people don’t realise how much we missed out on, so it’s all kind of just been thrown at us real quick.”
So what do you think? Are this year’s mocks any different to the former?
