Are Private Schools Elitist? Nefo Y-I, Townley Grammar
Universities like Oxford remain rigidly traditional in terms of teaching style and modules for more fluid courses like literature, which only serves to limit students’ scope of study.
Private schools also heavily benefited from the teacher assessed grades used in the pandemic, as they were presumed to be higher performing, whilst state schools bore the brunt of it. This is because teacher assessed grades mostly relied on “expectation”, what they *think* will happen. The abilities of the students in private schools were able to be more seamlessly glossed over.
This was evident particularly in the case of the North London Collegiate school, where all A-Level students received wuther an A* or an A in all subjects. The Sunday Times even reported that the school gave A* grades to more than 90% of A-Level students in 2021, an astronomical increase from the 34% of students who got an A* in 2019 from the school.
It is no secret that this £22k per annum girls school, though under investigation, was able to even attempt this due to its private school status.
The privilege of these schools needs to be assessed, and hopefully by using the fiasco concerning teacher assessed grades as a starting point, we can begin to level out the playing field of education for all.
