Below we have compiled a list of four built-in security features that prevent anyone but you from accessing your data.

Use a strong password

The first – and most important thing – you have to do to protect your device is to set a strong passcode.

It’s also one of the first things Apple prompts you to do when you set up a new device.

“Setting a passcode also turns on data protection, which encrypts your iPhone data with 256-bit AES encryption,” Apple said.

To set up a password if you haven’t already, head to your Settings > Passcode > Turn Passcode On > Enter a code and press done.

Use Face or Touch ID

For even more protection you can add a biometric passcode on top of your password – such as Face ID or Touch ID depending on your model.

This provides a secure and convenient way to unlock your iPhone, authorize payments, and sign in to third-party apps.

To enable this, go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Set up Face ID, then follow the onscreen instructions.

Turn on Find My

Turning Find My on has a number of benefits, the first being it can help you track your phone if it gets lost or stolen.

But perhaps more importantly, the tool lets you erase your device if you have no hope of getting it back.

That means even if the thief somehow gets into your phone, your data is no longer stored on the device.

To enable Find My, go to Settings > Find My > toggle on Find My iPhone.

You can also turn on Find My Network, which locates your device even if it’s offline.

Manage controls/access

You can also control what features are available without unlocking your iPhone.

Disabling access to certain features can keep your device safer – for example, USB connections.

To manage access to features, go to Settings > Face/Touch ID & Passcode > select options below Allow Access When Locked.
