Apple: Apple adds three new suppliers to India list in 2022, Tata misses out – Times of India
Apple’s new suppliers in India
Molex and Onsemi have facilities in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, respectively. Meanwhile, Shenzhen Erwin Precision Technology is based out of Uttar Pradesh. The report didn’t mention what Apple sources from these three suppliers. Apart from this, Apple continues to work with its existing suppliers which it added earlier. This includes its three contract manufacturers — Hon Hai (Foxconn), Pegatron and Wistron along with component suppliers including Foxlink, Jabil, Flex and others.
However, a major chunk of Apple’s suppliers remain based out of China with 151 facilities serving the company’s supply chain. In China, Apple has added five suppliers and has removed eight from the list. On a global scale, the iPhone maker has removed 19 suppliers while has also added 18 new ones.
Tata Electronics not on Apple’s list
Apple hasn’t added Tata Electronics to its suppliers’ list in India. The company’s latest addition has already started supplying mechanics for iPhones and assembling small batches of the iPhone SE.
The Tata Group is set to take over Wistron’s manufacturing unit in Karnataka and the company is expected to play a major role in iPhone manufacturing in the coming years. The report also mentions that the trial production of the iPhone 15 is already underway.
Tim Cook on Indian market
During a recent earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that India is at a tipping point. With a growing middle class, the country can serve as a major market for the company’s products, he added. Cook also noted that Apple posted quarterly record revenues in India with strong double-digit growth.
To underline its focus on India, Apple also opened two of its flagship retail stores in Mumbai and New Delhi in April. The company also sees the country as a major production base.
Currently, India accounts for 5% of total iPhone production. The numbers are expected to grow to 20-25% in the coming years. In 2022-23, iPhone also exports surged nearly four times YoY to cross $5 billion.
