Apple announces repairs shake-up
Apple has announced a major shake-up of the way its devices are repaired with users now able to roll up their sleeves and attempt to fix their own products.
Apple users will finally be allowed to fix their own devices in a major shake-up to the tech giant’s repairs system.
Owners of iPhones, iPads, iMacs and other devices have been left at the behest of Apple repairers or risked voiding their warranty if they get their item fixed by an external provider.
However, this will change in 2022 with the tech giant announcing a new system.
The company said its Self Service Repair allows users with damaged devices to be sent Apple genuine tools and components. These are the same ones used at the Genius Bar at Apple retailers.
It will also offer text-based online repair manuals through the Apple Service Repair Online Store. The program will be similar to a previous repair program rolled out by the tech giant.
At first the repairs will be focused on iPhones but a similar service for other devices will be issued at a later date.
Apple chief operating officer Jeff Williams said they wanted to give customers more independence.
“Creating greater access to Apple genuine parts gives our customers even more choice if a repair is needed,” he said.
“In the past three years, Apple has nearly doubled the number of service locations with access to Apple genuine parts, tools, and training, and now we’re providing an option for those who wish to complete their own repairs.”
When it launches in the U.S. in early-2022, the store will offer some 200 parts and tools to consumers.
Fortunately, performing these tasks at home won’t void the device’s warranty.
