Antonio Conte confirmed as new Tottenham boss after agreeing blockbuster £15m contract

Tottenham have confirmed the appointment of former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte as head coach. Spurs moved quickly to agree a reported blockbuster £15million-per-year contract with the Italian after sacking Nuno Espirito Santo on Monday.

The north Londoners actually attempted to appoint Conte in the summer.

Chairman Daniel Levy sacked Jose Mourinho in April and former midfielder Ryan Mason stepped in to oversee the first team for the remainder of the 2020-21 season.

A chaotic recruitment process saw Spurs go close to appointing three different coaches on separate occasions, including Conte.

Talks are believed to have broken down with the two parties failing to agree terms. Conte wanted assurances over spending and Kane’s future, with the striker widely understood to want out.

Spurs went on to speak to Paulo Fonseca and Gennaro Gattuso before eventually landing Nuno.

Conte has previously had success in English football. He guided Chelsea to their latest Premier League title in 2017 and won the FA Cup a year later before his harsh sacking.

Last season, he helped Inter Milan win their first Serie A title since 2010 but quit on his own accord during the summer.

Conte said: “I am extremely happy to return to coaching, and to do so at a Premier League club that has the ambition to be a protagonist again.

“Tottenham Hotspur has state-of-the-art facilities and one of the best stadiums in the world.

“I can’t wait to start working to convey to the team and the fans the passion, mentality and determination that have always distinguished me, as a player and as a coach.

“Last summer our union did not happen because the end of my relationship with Inter was still too recent and emotionally too involved with the end of the season, so I felt that it wasn’t yet the right time to return to coaching.

“But the contagious enthusiasm and determination of Daniel Levy in wanting to entrust me with this task had already hit the mark. Now that the opportunity has returned, I have chosen to take it with great conviction.”
