Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania Writer on Why Hope’s Child Was Cut From the Movie

Warning: The below contains full spoilers for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

After the release of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania earlier this week, the mother of a child actor named Lucas Grant posted on Instagram that Grant had a role in the MCU film as Hope Pym (Evangeline Lilly)’s son. There’s just one problem… the role was left on the cutting room floor.

Grant’s mother said as much in the Instagram post, writing, “as it sometimes happens, the storyline was changed after he filmed and his scenes did not make it into the final version of the movie.” And, speaking to IGN this week (you can read the full interview here), screenwriter Jeff Loveness confirmed that was indeed the case, taking full credit for the kid’s removal from the movie.

Loveness explained that the appearance of Hope’s son would’ve come in the “probability storm” scene, where Scott (Paul Rudd) was seeing and interacting with countless versions of himself that would’ve come about if he’d made different choices. According to Loveness, there were a few versions of that scene that went through revisions.

“I think it just didn’t fit in the flow of what we were doing,” he said. “There was more of that probability storm scene where Scott had all the multiplications and the Schrodinger’s cat thing. There was more of a psychological element to it too, in earlier scripts, which was really cool. But… it’s on me. I think it just seemed a little disjointed.”

“There was more story of Kang [explaining] what you’re walking into and what you’re seeing. And it’s that kind of stuff,” he went on. “It was me. It’s my shoddy writing. And the scene wanted to be simpler, and it became more of that fun sequence that it became.”
