A popular beach was closed after another shark was spotted circling in the waters where a local man was recently mauled to death.
A popular Perth beach was closed on Thursday after a shark was spotted circling in its waters, days after a man was killed.
The alert was raised at about 8.30am in the morning after members of the public reported seeing the shark about 100m off shore at Port Beach.
Surf Life Saving WA took to social media to alert North Fremantle beachgoers that the unspecified 3m-long shark was circling in the water.
The beach has been closed until further notice.
Just five days earlier, Perth man Paul Millachip was mauled to death by a shark at the same beach.
The 57-year-old, who was a regular at the North Fremantle beach, went swimming on Saturday morning when the attack happened at about 10am.
Emergency services responded to reports of the attack, which was witnessed by a number of other people, including four teenage boys who were in a dinghy metres away from the victim.
Mr Millachip’s wife of 35-years, who wished not to share her first name, said her husband died doing what he loved, which was exercising.
She said he was an avid cyclist who also competed in triathlons and marathons.
“He was a wonderful man, a wonderful father, and he loved his exercise,” the woman said at a press conference on Sunday.
“It came out of the blue, but it did happen – we just have to deal with it.”
Only a pair of goggles was found during an air and sea search for the man on Saturday, but it was scaled back after dark and resumed at first light on Sunday.
It was then called off by 3.30pm.
It is unknown if the shark spotted at the beach on Thursday was the same one that fatally attacked Mr Millachip.
