Another club enters race for in-demand Magpie

St Kilda’s board has signed off on the potential acquisition of Jordan De Goey this summer, with the club confident in its “due diligence” on the off-contract Magpie.

De Goey is set to headline the list of this summer’s free agents after having a deal previously offered to him pulled by Collingwood in the wake of his controversial mid-season trip to Bali.

St Kilda has been continually linked with the 25-year-old, given his age and ability to fill an area of need on its list.

“We have always had board support for us to look at any free agents or tradeable player as long as they fit in our strategy and we have done our due diligence,” Saints football boss Simon Lethlean told The Age.

“We have done work on Jordan De Goey along with all other players that are out as free agents or tradeable players this year, but De Goey is the topical one at the moment.

“I am conscious of not wanting to talk about other clubs’ players, but we keep getting asked about him in particular.

“We are interested in De Goey and up until such time as he says he is staying at the Pies we will keep monitoring his situation and speak with his management.”

Collingwood coach Craig McRae has repeatedly expressed his desire to retain De Goey at the club beyond this season, despite the club not yet tabling a fresh contract offer to him.

De Goey has played a key role in Collingwood’s strong finish to the home and away season, and finished the season averaging 20.8 disposals in 16 appearances – a hair under last year’s career-best mark.
