Andy Murray walked Nottingham streets hours before three killed in tragic attack
Andy Murray has spoken out about the “heartbeaking” incident in Nottingham city centre after three people were killed in the early hours of Tuesday. The world No 44 is currently competing in the Nottingham Challenger and was in the area hours before the tragic attack.
Murray is the top seed in Nottingham this week, where he is hoping to continue his grass-court form after winning the title in Surbiton on Sunday. He was able to get his campaign underway against qualifier Joris De Loore but didn’t know whether the match would go ahead after the horrific killings.
The tournament held a minute of silence for the three victims ahead of play on Wednesday. And Murray said there were things bigger than tennis as he reacted to the incident on Tuesday.
“It was obviously shocking when I woke up this morning and when I was going down to breakfast a few messages on our team chat came up,” the top seed said. The three-time Grand Slam champion had been in the area hours before the attack took place.
He continued: “We are staying in the city centre and had been out for dinner last night and walking around those areas. You never expect something like that to happen, it was really shocking.
“I didn’t know if it was going to affect anything here or not because the streets were closed this morning. Really shocking and obviously heartbreaking for the victims and the people involved so hopefully everyone is safe now.
