Andy Murray refuses to commit to Wimbledon return as loss leaves sour taste
A dejected Andy Murray speaking immediately after his devastating five-set loss to has refused to fully commit to playing Wimbledon next year after his second-round exit. It was a tale of stories on Centre Court for Murray on Thursday and Friday.
The three-time Major champion looked set to record his biggest win at a Grand Slam in several years before the curfew cut him short. Still, Murray had momentum on his side as play resumed on Friday as he needed just one set to progress to the third round.
But the British superstar appeared sluggish as he struggled to find a breakthrough opportunity on Tsitsipas’ serve, but was managing to keep his opponent at bay to force a tiebreak. However, Tsitsipas found another gear when it mattered to force a deciding set where Murray appeared to run out of steam.
The near-five-hour contest eventually came to an end with Tsitsipas progressing to the next round while Murray walked off the court and waved goodbye to the Centre Court crowd.
This year’s Championships were seen as Murray’s best chance yet to go deep at Wimbledon for the first time since reaching the quarter-finals in 2017. But defeat to Tsitsipas clearly cut deep for Murray as he held his head in his hands while assessing what had just happened.
And he refused to confirm whether he’ll want to come back to compete at Wimbledon for the 16th time in his career. When asked on whether he wants to return to Wimbledon next year to have another crack it breaking into the second week, Murray said through gritted teeth: “I don’t know.
“Motivation is obviously a big thing. Continuing having early losses in tournaments like this don’t necessarily help with that. Yeah, it’s similar to I guess last year. I had a long think about things, spoke to my family, decided to keep on going.
“I don’t plan to stop right now. But, yeah, this one will take a little while to get over.
“Hopefully find the motivation again to keep training, keep pushing, try and keep getting better.”
