Andy Murray reacts to Wimbledon exit and and explains major injury dilemma

The 35-year-old suffered his earliest ever exit at SW19 on Wednesday, crashing out after defeat to John Isner in their second-round clash.

Murray has twice undergone major hip operations to prolong his time at the summit of his sport and also carried an abdominal injury into this month’s competition in the capital.

And while he intends to return in 2023 to mount a stronger challenge, the Scot concedes he can no longer make long-term predictions with his career.

‘Well, yeah,’ Murray said to reporters when asked if he wants to return to Wimbledon.

‘I mean, it depends on how I am physically, [if] physically I feel good, then we’ll try to keep playing.

‘But it’s extremely difficult with the problems I’ve had with my body in the last few years to make long-term predictions about how I’m going to be even in a few weeks, never mind in a year’s time.

‘If physically I’m in a good place, yeah, I will continue to play. But it’s not easy to keep my body in optimal condition to compete at the highest level.’

Murray added: ‘It’s frustrating because I was in a good place with my game. The injury didn’t help. The positive is that physically I was fine during the matches (at Wimbledon). I just couldn’t quite get the win today.’

Murray followed Emma Raducanu out of Wimbledon after the US Open champion suffered a straight sets defeat to Caroline Garcia.

Cameron Norrie meanwhile fought back to beat Jaume Munar in five sets to book his place in the third round.
