It has been 10 years since Murray lifted his first Wimbledon trophy – becoming Britain’s first men’s champion since 1936 – and he won it a second time in 2016.
His career looked over before career-saving surgery and he has been on a resurgence this year, winning three ATP Challenger titles – which is one level below the ATP Tour – and climbing back up to world No.39.
Seven-time Grand Slam champion Wilander has now told Eurosport that fellow former world No.1 Murray can go all the way at this year’s Championships.
‘I think Andy Murray thinks that this is the tournament where he still feels that he can do very well,’ Wilander said.
‘And very well, in Andy Murray’s mind, is most probably winning it. And do I think he can? Yeah, he can upset people.
‘Can he win it? Well, I don’t know. He’s won it already a couple of times, so yes!’
Wilander feels that Murray will feature ‘for another four or five years’ at Wimbledon after he spoke openly about retirement this week.
Murray has acknowledged that he can’t ‘go on forever’ and has an ‘idea’ of when he would like to hang up his racket – but insisted that he wanted to finish his career on his ‘own terms’.
‘I think we will see Andy Murray figure out a schedule where he can still keep playing Wimbledon for another four or five years, which is so welcome because we want to see these stories,’ Wilander added.
‘It’s great for the sport, it’s great for Andy Murray because he’s also turning a leaf around where his attitude early in his career was one way and now his attitude on Wimbledon Centre Court is he wants to bring every person that’s watching him into the match emotionally.
‘And he’s so positive and he’s using every possible angle to play better tennis and to make the people enjoy watching him.’
Meanwhile, Murray’s family have been angered by a promotional painting commissioned by Wimbledon chiefs which has omitted the two-time champion.
