Andrew LLoyd Webber’s new Broadway show closing after just 10 weeks

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s beautiful new work Make A Joyful Noise rang out over Westminster Abbey last Saturday as King Charles was crowned.

There has been rather less joy elsewhere as he had to mark the Broadway closing of one of his biggest shows after 35 years last month.

This has been swiftly followed by the shock news this week that his brand-new Broadway production will be shutting down.

Bad Cinderella only celebrated its star-studded opening night just ten weeks ago.

It is a major blow for the man who was known on both sides of The Atlantic as the king of Broadway and London’s West End.

Bad Cinderella only had its official opening night on March 23. The show was a reworked version of the London production of Cinderella.

The original West End musical itself had a rocky and surprisingly short run, despite also boasting a book by Oscar-winner Emerald Fennell. the post-modern take on the classic fairytale had divided critics but ultimately failed to attract sufficient audiences.

It had also been at the high-profile heart of the struggle between the Arts and the government as pandemic lockdowns and regulations repeatedly capsized its opening night and the composer himself publicly denounced government initiatives.

Cinderella in London only ran from August 2021 to June 2022, a major disappointment, and its abrupt closure was announced without first informing many of the cast and this who were about to join the show.

Bad Cinderella received worse reviews and was startlingly not nominated for a single Tony Award.

So much professional turmoil has also been played out as the backdrop for the devastating illness of Lloyd Webber’s son Nicholas. The composer died aged just 43 on March 25 this year, following an 18-month battle with gastric cancer.
