Andrew Lloyd Webber speaks candidly on son’s devastating cancer fight

Andrew Lloyd Webber, 75, has been left “devastated” by his son Nicholas’ cancer battle. The Oscar-winning composer opened up on the heartbreaking situation when he had to miss the opening of his new Broadway show, Bad Cinderella, in New York at the Imperial Theatre.

Speaking out in a statement, Lord Lloyd-Webber revealed Nicholas, 43, who is also a composer, was diagnosed with the disease 18 months ago.

He said: “I am absolutely devastated to say that my eldest son Nick is critically ill.

“As my friends and family know, he has been fighting gastric cancer for the last 18 months and Nick is now hospitalised.

“I therefore have not been able to attend the recent previews of Bad Cinderella and as things stand, I will not be able to cheer on its wonderful cast, crew and orchestra on opening night this Thursday.

“We are all praying that Nick will turn the corner.

“He is bravely fighting with his indomitable humour, but at the moment my place is with him and the family.”

Nicholas followed in his dad’s footsteps as a composer, and has worked on an adaption of The Little Prince.

Nicholas was also nominated for a Grammy for musical theatre album collaboration with his father, Greg Wells and David Zippel for Lord Lloyd-Webber’s Cinderella.

Andrew recently shared an update on his son’s health in an Instagram video.

The composer shared the clip to mark the Broadway opening night of Bad Cinderella.

“I wanted to thank you first for the huge outpouring of messages of support for my son, Nick,” he said.

The Phantom of the Opera creator added: “He’s now been moved into hospice, and he’s battling away.

“I think he’s over the worst of this first bout of pneumonia he’s got as a result of his cancer, which is just ghastly.

“But we’re all here, and the family here has gathered around and it was the right place for us all to be, I think.”

“I just want to send my very best wishes to the other families I have around the world in theatre, particularly, of course, the cast of Bad Cinderella because it’s the opening night tonight,” Lloyd Webber added.
