Anamoe completes Cox Plate redemption story

Anamoe has completed its redemption story, avenging last year’s second-placed finish to take out the 2022 Cox Plate at the Moonee Valley Racecourse.

After being beaten by State Of Rest in last year’s Cox Plate, the James Cummings-trained Anamoe beat out I’m Thunderstruck, El Bodegon and Zaaki to win the $5 million race.

Jockey James McDonald timed his run to perfection after Zaaki had led for the first half of the race, before Anamoe came home with a wet sail.

Cummings was overcome with emotion after the race and called Anamoe “the best horse I’ve had anything to do with”.

“It’s a humbling experience for me, but I’m just grateful that I can be a part of a horse as great as Anamoe,” he told Seven.

“The truth is he’s just had a gun preparation. A couple of times it hasn’t been plain sailing, but my team have come together in phenomenal fashion.”

Despite the eventual success, Cummings admitted that there were hiccups along the journey in preparation for the Cox Plate.

“There were moments that would drive a lesser man to the bottle,” he said.

“But he’s been managed by an extremely efficient team. I’ve got some unbelievably talented and passionate people behind him that help to make me look good.”

The end to this year’s race was a stark contrast to the controversial finish to last year’s Cox Plate, when Anamoe was bumped by the eventual winner, Ireland’s State Of Rest.

Anamoe’s team launched a protest that was eventually dismissed by Racing Victoria stewards, giving trainer Joseph O’Brien and jockey Johnny Allen a famous win.
