An SUV Crash At London School Kills 8-Year-Old Girl; A Woman Arrested

A child was killed after a car crashed into an elementary school in southwest London. The incident also left six other children and two adults injured, London’s Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

“We can now confirm that sadly a child has died following an incident where a car collided with a building at a school in Wimbledon,” police said.

The accident occurred at a school in Camp Road, about a mile from the venue where the Wimbledon Grand Slam championship is currently taking place.

A woman in her 40s has been “arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving”, the police said.

Police said they were called at around 9:45 a.m. local time (0845 UTC). The London Fire Brigade and the London Ambulance, including the air ambulance, were also at the scene.

Police said that after the crash “the driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene,” adding that no arrests have been made.

“We are not treating this incident as terror-related,” London’s Metropolitan Police said in a statement. “An investigation is underway to understand the full circumstances of what has taken place.”

Going by the aerial footage of the scene, a Land Rover car was stopped at an angle against the wall of the modern school building.

Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, called the incident “absolutely devastating.” In a tweet, Khan said his “heart goes out to everyone affected” and urged people to avoid the area to allow emergency services free access.

“An investigation is underway to understand the full circumstances and I continue to stay in close contact with the Met and other emergency services,” Khan said.

Health Minister Steve Barclay wrote on Twitter that he was staying informed about the “distressing incident.” “My thoughts are with those sadly injured and everyone who has been affected,” he added.

“Now that a police investigation is underway we will not be making any further public statement for the time being and would ask that the privacy of our school community is respected at this deeply upsetting time,” The Study Preparatory School said in the statement.
