An Immortal Hulk Ally’s Most Powerful Weapon May Have Just Gotten Him Killed

Gamma Flight enacts a plan to stop an invasion of Gamma Zombies, and it may have gotten one of their most classic members killed by his own creation.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Gamma Flight #4, available now from Marvel Comics.

The irradiated heroes of Gamma Flight have just found themselves embroiled in a  deep conspiracy. Not only is Abomination back with his own unwitting army of Gamma Zombies, he has even managed to return the Skaar, the son of the Hulk to his own former glory to fight at his side.

Thankfully, Gamma Flight’s Doc Sasquatch knows exactly how to stop their villainous plot before it even starts. Unfortunately, it may have cost Doc Sasquatch his life in Gamma Flight #4 by Al Ewing, Crystal Frasier, Lan Medina, Antonio Fabela and VC’s Joe Sabino.

In the time since the team accidentally uncovered the zombie army waiting to be set loose from their Gamma Purgatory, the heroes have been overwhelmed by the threat looming overhead. Luckily, the technology that Abomination has used to put his plan in action is of Doc Samson’s own design. It’s the same Cathexis Ray Generator that Doc used in his first appearance to strip Bruce Banner of his Gamma and psionic energies in 1971’s Incredible Hulk #141, by Roy Thomas and Herb Trimpe. Considering his intimate knowledge of the device, he could’ve reconfigured the ray for its original purpose and destroy Abomination’s army before they can even be deployed. With Del Frye leading the way, the team is able to make their way back into Abomination’s facility with relative ease, although putting their own plan in action may have dire consequences for Doc Sasquatch.

However, this issue sees Doc Sasquatch consumed entirely by the Cathexis Ray Generator as it overloads during his toiling. In an instant, his body is enveloped by the Gamma energy radiating around him, as is Carl Creel’s (aka the Absorbing Man.) All that their teammates can do is look on as they are turned to dust.

Of course, this is hardly the end for these two heroes, even if figuring out exactly where they’ve ended up is a tall order in itself. The technology they are dealing with has proven to be more complex than Doc Samson himself understands completely, meaning it may very well have just transported or transformed the heroes caught in its blast. Considering the fact that Carl Creel has already survived overloading during his time as a living teleporter, this wouldn’t be the worst thing that has happened to him.

However, Doc Samson is far less resilient than the Absorbing Man, and being trapped in Sasquatch’s body isn’t doing him any favors in that department. Despite his own super strength and any general healing factor, Sasquatch is not built to be disintegrated and reformed the way that Carl Creel is, nor has he proven himself able to handle anything similar.
