Amit Shah to take up 6-point plan for co-operative reforms next week
Besides states and UTs, the two-day national conference will be attended by heads of around 40 cooperatives and national institutes, read a statement from the ministry of cooperation. The newly formed ministry was created on July 6, 2021 during the first cabinet expansion with Shah being given the additional charge.
“As many as 54 suggestions from various stakeholders, including 20 state governments, have been received by this ministry on the new national cooperative policy. These suggestions will be taken up during the two-day seminar with the states,” said a senior official from the ministry.
The aim of the new policy will be to promote new cooperatives, revitalise defunct ones, ensure cooperation among cooperatives, increase membership outreach, develop cooperatives for sustainable growth, mitigating regional imbalances and role of cooperatives in social security.
“For example, at times, the needs of those above 60 years of age cannot be addressed by the private sector. In such cases, we would like social cooperatives to step in,” said the official while explaining the scope of social organisations.
Some of the issues affecting growth of cooperatives are lack of effective governance, leadership, professional management and low level of technology adoption.
The union budget this year allocated ₹900 crore with the capital outlay of ₹11 crores for setting up a new secretariat.
