Call it an attempt to divert the nation’s attention or sheer stupidity, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has been criticised over his tweet on cricket while the country is in the economic and political crisis.

On Saturday, he tweeted, “Another Afridi with such power hitting … ????.” His comments was related to Pakistan Super League.

In another tweet, he appreciated the PCB, the local government and administrators for succesfully conducting the tournament. He wrote,”A nail-biting finish to the 8th edition of Pakistan Super League. My appreciation is due to Chairman PCB, CMs of Sindh & Punjab, provincial administrations, police & the participating teams for making the event a huge success. Spectators kept it animated with their energy & zeal.”

His tweets around the PSL was slammed by Pakistanis who advised him to focus on the crisis in his hands instead of enjoying cricket.

“Mr. Prime is busy watching cricket, as Pakistan recorded the highest inflation rate, no IMF deal as yet… Thank you very much Mr. Shehbaz Sharif for your great services in the last 11 months for the homeland,” a user responded to his tweet. “Ain’t no way this nigga watching PSL Final while there a literal civil war going on in the country,” the second one said.

The third one felt, “begherat tu match dhaik mulk jal raha (the country is burning and this shameless is watching match).”

“Country is on the verge of default, IMF is asking to end our nuclear program, the worst ever political and human rights situation in the country and you are busy watching PSL. Shame on you.” another one added.

Fifth one said, “Economy pr dehan dy chotay Psl dekhny sa mulq nhi chalta.”

Pakistan is grappling with one of the country’s worst economic crises in recent years amid dwindling foreign exchange reserves, high inflation and sharp depreciation of its currency. It is rolling out higher taxes to get the IMF bailout package.

On the other hand, the political crisis has also made the matter worse for debt-ridden Pakistan.

“Pakistan’s recurrent economic crises are the product of a refusal to reform. The country’s national narrative has led to ever-increasing and unsustainable military spending. Jihadist terrorism has blocked foreign direct investment. An unrealistic dependence on China has resulted in huge external debt,” Husain Haqqani, a former Pakistan ambassador to the US and Senior Fellow at Hudson Institute, had told PTI earlier.
