As the sun rises and sets, so does the train on America’s highest railroad – and now, more visitors will get to experience a sunrise journey up Pikes Peak’s 14,115-foot summit.
After two successful trips earlier this summer, with a portion of ticket sales benefiting local causes, the Broadway Manitou & Pikes Peak Cog Railway has announced that it will summit the famed peak two more times this year. The first trip, on Sept. 11, will honor first responders, with a portion of proceeds going to the Manitou Springs fire and police departments. The second trip takes place Oct. 8, Indigenous Peoples’ Day, with a portion of proceeds benefiting the Manitou School District.
From the vantage point of the world’s highest and longest cog railway, visitors might understand why Katharine Lee Bates was inspired to write “America the Beautiful” after a trip to Colorado Springs in 1893. The railway predates this trip by two years, originally built in 1891.
The railway reopened in 2021 after a four-year closure for a $100 million renovation. The new-and-improved train begins its journey at the Manitou Depot at the base of Pikes Peak to complete the 9-mile journey to the summit, where riders can learn about the history of the region and have coffee at the Summit Visitor Center.
Tickets are available on the cog’s website for $99 per person. If weather prohibits the train’s summit, it will go as far as possible, but ticket refunds will not be available.
