American tourist sparks fury by saying US does pasta ‘better than Italy’

AN American tourist has been ridiculed online after suggesting that they could get better pasta at home than in Italy.

Italian cuisine is one of the most popular in the world, with pizza and pasta among its best-loved dishes.

However, one tourist was not impressed by what they tried on a recent visit to Europe, insisting that American Italian food chain Olive Garden made better pasta than anyone in Italy.

They took their unpopular opinion to Reddit, where furious people told them they were just plain wrong.

They wrote: “The Olive Garden Alfredo was better than any Alfredo I had during my visit in Italy.

“I spent two weeks in Italy from Milan, Florence, Venice and Rome. I tried Alfredo from all levels, street level pasta in Venice to the original Alfredo restaurant in Rome, where it was created.

“Nothing came close to being as good as the Alfredo that I get in my local Olive Garden here in SoCal.”

No one agreed with the opinion, with plenty pointing out that Alfredo sauce was not something that was popular outside of America.

One person claimed that any restaurant serving it in Italy was likely just a “tourist trap” serving inauthentic food.

They wrote: “Any restaurant in Italy that served Alfredo was a tourist trap that catered to travellers who expect the dishes they see at home, not the food actually eaten in Italy.

“I am not surprised in the least that it was inferior to what you find in America, even Olive Garden.

“Sadly, there was tons of great regional Italian food that you passed up for a taste of home. The food in those four cities is utterly phenomenal, if you eat the dishes that are from that area.”

One angry Italian said: “You come to my country and order an Italo-American dish?? What do you expect? Get out of Italy.”

A third likened it to visiting other countries and expecting it to be like American fast food.

They wrote: “Next stop, Mexico to compare Taco Bell to authentic Mexican cuisine.”

It’s not the first time American tourists have caused confusion with their food opinions.

One raised eyebrows last year when they praised British supermarket meal deals after their trip to the UK.

He wrote: “Tesco, Sainsbury, etc. Meal Deals. £3 or £4 gets you a sandwich, snack and drink nearly everywhere.

“Plenty of vegetarian/fish options for us. There’s nothing comparable in NYC, unless you consider a single slice of cheese pizza an adequate lunch. We lived on these when touring around.”

And another American tourist in the UK went viral when they made an embarrassing mistake.
