Amazing Spider-Man Just Turned [SPOILER] Into a Scary as Hell Villain

The final issue of Marvel’s current Amazing Spider-Man run sees one character get a terrifying new look and identity referred to as “Chasm.”

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for The Amazing Spider-Man #93, available now from Marvel.

Ben Reilly’s time posing as Spider-Man may have now come to a close, but the clone is now picking up the pieces of his life and taking on a new terrifying identity — Chasm.

The Amazing Spider-Man #93 sees Peter and Ben finally have their big face-to-face confrontation within the halls of the Beyond Corporation. The two take turns exchanging punches and kicks for a time, but the fight ultimately ends with Ben falling off a ledge and into a pile of some dangerous-looking chemicals. Peter reaches for his clone and tries to help him to safety; however, Ben accepts his fate and decides to simply let it happen. Yet, despite the climactic ending to Ben’s story, Marvel seems to have more plans for the character that won’t see him stay dead for very long.

Days after the fight, Ben’s partner Janine Godbe goes searching for him. In the wreckage of the Beyond Corporation, she some “expunging psycho-reactive goo” and Ben’s body, which seems to still be at least somewhat conscious. Cut to a couple of months later and Ben is indeed alive, although perhaps not all that well. After talking to himself in the mirror for a short time, he pulls a purple, black and green mask over his face, all while yelling “no” and “STOP!” The mask and accompanying costume appear to take control over the character, as he jumps out the window and reveals his new identity to be “Chasm.”

“I wanted to thank and…apologize isn’t quite the right word…to the Ben Reilly fans out there,” editor Nick Lowe wrote in a note at the end of the issue. “Ben is an incredible character who didn’t really have a place in the Spider-Landscape anymore. Peter Parker isn’t going anywhere, and Miles Morales is here to stay, so Ben has been a challenge for us, and we thought this story gave us an opportunity to not only give Ben a last run as Spider-Man and to do a rare thing in the world of superhero comics — a tragedy. With most of our characters locked into eternal roles, a truly tragic story is very rare, and we hope we did Ben justice with it. As you just read in our “Days” story, we may not have seen the last of Ben Reilly.”
