Amazing photos show The Trafford Centre before it opened in 1998

These amazing photographs capture what The Trafford Centre looked like just days before it opened in the late 1990s.

If you grew up in Manchester, you’re bound to remember standing by the dolphin fountain and waiting for it to shoot up streams of water into the air, or sitting in The Orient and wondering why you couldn’t swim in the food court pool in The Trafford Centre.

But these photos, from our archives Mirrorpix, capture what the site looked like eight days prior to official opening on September 2, 1998 and how we know it to be today.

The Trafford Centre opened its doors for the very first time on September 10, 1996 after 27 months of construction and succeeded in attracting big retailers to sign up straight away, with some of the first spaces being taken by Selfridges, Debehnhams and Boots.
