Amanda Abbington is the latest celebrity said to be in talks to join this year’s Strictly Come Dancing line-up.

The Sherlock actress, 49, is believed to be considering competing in the upcoming series of the popular BBC dance competition as it is an ambition of hers before her 50th.

Amanda has two children with ex-husband Martin Freeman, 51, who she split from in 2016, and is engaged to escapologist Jonathan Goodwin, 43, who was left paralysed in 2021 after a stunt on America’s Got Talent: Extreme went wrong.

‘Amanda has had a rough ride over the past seven years and just recently has she come out the other side,’ an insider said.

‘The accident only brought Amanda and Jonathan closer together and she’s keen to start a whole new chapter in her life.’

The source added to The Sun: ‘Part of that is taking part in ‘Strictly’ because it’s a long-held ambition of hers and one she is on track to fulfil before her milestone 50th birthday next year.’

Amanda has previously been vocal about her dreams of appearing on Strictly and previously told the Independent that it is the only reality show she’d ‘love to do’.

‘Why would you want to be in the jungle for three weeks and eat testicles with Joey Essex for money?’ she said.

‘It’s like going back to Bedlam, watching people doing horrible things for entertainment.

‘The only thing I’d love to do is Strictly Come Dancing. I love the idea of learning something. This is an official application. But I’m sure me being on it would be its downfall. The curse of Amanda Abbington strikes again!’

Earlier this year, Amanda admitted that she only landed her role on Sherlock thanks to ‘nepotism’ and her relationship with ex-husband Martin Freeman.

The actress shot to fame for her portrayal of Mary Watson, wife to Freeman’s Dr. John Watson in the BBC series, which ran for four seasons.

She explained: ‘I was with Martin at the time, there was a lot of nepotism being banded around. It’s true, it was that.’

Amanda and Martin met on the set of a film they were working on together in the year 2000 and began what turned out to be a 16-year relationship.

The couple had two children during their years together, before separating in 2016. Amanda later became engaged to daredevil Johnathan.

Strictly Come Dancing is expected to return to the BBC in the autumn.
