All the changes coming to Tesco in 2023 – from Clubcard to deliveries
Lots of us will do our food shopping at Tesco, or top up our car’s fuel at its garages.
Perhaps some of us have a mobile phone contract with the supermarket – or all of the above in a bid to collect as many Clubcard points as possible.
The resulting vouchers from the loyalty scheme allow you to get money off your groceries, spend on days out, or even put towards flights with Virgin Atlantic via their Flying Club partnership.
Whichever applies to you, there are some changes coming to Tesco services in 2023 and 2024 that it’s worth being aware of.
Here’s all you need to know about them.
Tesco Clubcard app is being replaced
From April 18, 2023, the Tesco Clubcard app is being scrapped.
If you use this app to keep track of your Clubcard points, or to scan at the till when you’re shopping, then you’ll want to switch to the general Tesco app – called the Tesco Grocery & Clubcard app.
Get the app now via the App Store (for Apple) or Google Play (for Android).
Not only is there a section for keeping tabs on Clubcard activity, but you can also search for products, order Home Delivery slots and Whoosh Delivery from your phone.
So, it can be quite handy…
Tesco Clubcard vouchers to decrease in value
From June 14, 2023, your Clubcard vouchers will be worth less when turned into Reward Partner codes.
They’ll be worth 2x their value, instead of 3x. So, say you’ve got £3 in Clubcard vouchers to spend with one of the loyalty scheme’s many Reward Partners, that will soon translate to £6 to spend instead of £9.
However, it is worth noting that if you redeem your Clubcard points before June 13, you can still get the full 3x value.
Tesco explains on its official website: ‘We’re extending the validity period on Tesco Clubcard Reward Partner codes ordered until June 13, so that they’re valid for 12 months, rather than the usual 6 months.
‘So don’t worry, there’s plenty of time to use them at their current value before we make the change.’
‘If you already have a Tesco Clubcard Reward Partner code, you can still use it at up to 3x the value until its expiry date. The expiry date can be found in your order email or in the My Rewards section in the Tesco Grocery & Clubcard app.’
If you turn Clubcard vouchers into Virgin Points for Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, you’ll be disappointed to know that you’ll start getting 2x value instead of 2.5x value.

How you collect Clubcard points on fuel is changing
From June 14, 2023, there’ll also be a change to how you earn Clubcard points on fuel purchases.
Currently, you get one Clubcard point for every £2 spent on fuel such as petrol from Tesco Petrol Filling Stations (excluding Esso stations at Tesco Express shops).
That will change to one Clubcard point for every two litres of fuel you purchase.
People who use Clubcard Pay+ will experience a similar shift, getting one point per one litre of fuel bought. There’ll also be changes for those who use Tesco Bank credit cards to purchase fuel.
Tesco Groceries is putting up minimum basket charge and value
From May 2, 2023, there’s going to be a big change that affects all who buy groceries with Tesco online.
The minimum basket value will change from £40 to £50, so if your order is worth less than £50, you’ll get a minimum basket charge of £5 – instead of the current £4.
It’s worth noting that the current minimum value for Click+Collect orders will remain at £25.
There are some circumstances where a minimum basket charge doesn’t apply, at the time of writing, anyway – such as being given substitutions that pushes your basket below the minimum value allowed.
You can currently earn Clubcard points on the minimum basket charge. So, if you do pay the £4, you’ll get the relevant points.

Tesco Mobile will introduce new Europe data roaming charges
From 2024, some people using Tesco Mobile will pay extra for data roaming in Europe.
The change is set to affect people who joined Tesco Mobile or upgraded on or after June 16, 2022. From 2024, they will be ‘subject to roaming charges’, says Tesco Mobile’s website.
It adds: ‘All impacted customers will be contacted at least 30 days ahead of any changes coming into effect.’
For the rest of 2023, these individuals will still be able to enjoy the benefits of Home From Home – which allows data, text and call usage in 48 countries in the EU and beyond for no extra charges.
Anyone who joined before June 16, 2022 will be able to use Home From Home in 2023 and from 2024, Tesco Mobile explains, until they choose to upgrade – learn more here.
