All drivers need to know ahead of new congestion charge rule changes

RULES regarding London’s congestion charge zone are set to change.

Currently drivers in London face a £15 daily charge if they travel within the congestion zone between 7am and 10pm every day.

However from Monday the hours will be reduced – meaning drivers will only be charged for travelling in the zone between 7am and 6pm on weekdays.

Meanwhile on weekends and bank holidays the zone – which covers central London – will be in force between 12pm and 6pm.

The charge will remain the same at £15.

The congestion zone operates every day of the year except on Christmas Day and the days leading up from December 25 until after New Year’s Day.

Transport for London said the change was made in the hopes of giving the capital’s hospitality and nightlife businesses a boost after they took a hit during the Covid pandemic.

Last June, the zone charge temporarily jumped in London by an extra 30 per cent – £3.50.

TfL said this was introduced under the terms of its £1.6 billion bailout by the Government.

They believe the increased fee could reduce car trips by a third and encourage more people to take on walking or cycling.
